Marasmus Kwashiorkor Definition






Marasmus term more often we hear lately. The disease is there are two types of diseases mal nutrition (malnutrition), ie marasmus and kwashiorkor. Marasmus comes from the word marasmos (Germany language) that means dying. Malnutrition of this type usually are usually in the form of growth retardation, loss of fat under the skin, muscle sags, decreased appetite and mental retardation.


Kwashiorkor (in Africa means a child who is rejected) is a disorder caused by lack of acute protein. Characterized by growth retardation, skin discoloration and pigmentation of hair, bloated, anemia and inflammation of the skin. Patients usually experience changes in skin color darkened and thickened in some places, such as the limbs and back. Often accompanied by flaking skin and leave scars pink with rough surfaces.
Kwashiorkor was first discovered in Africa. A combination of marasmus and kwashiorkor is very dangerous and lead to death.
