Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a disorder in which the tissues of the uterus (endometrium) that is outside of the womb. Location endometriosis is most often located in organs in the pelvic cavity (pelvis), such as the ovaries (ovarian) and the layer that lines the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). Endometriosis can also occur in the gastrointestinal tract (gut, for example), lungs, skin, lymph nodes, and even the brain. Endometriosis is not an infectious disease so it will not rub off on others. Endometriosis is not cancer. Endometriosis is a statement, which is influenced by the hormone estrogen. In endometriosis, uterine tissue function normally, which means, influenced by hormones and follow the menstrual cycle. The uterine tissue to grow, shed and bleed as during menstruation.

However, because it is in a location that is not supposed to, they can lead to inflammation and adhesions with the surrounding tissue. Moreover, the blood can not get out to form cysts that contain brownish blood (endometrioma).

Endometriosis disease often affects women of childbearing age (menstruation, since the beginning of menstruation to menopause). About 1 in 10 women of reproductive age suffer from endometriosis. However, endometriosis can occur also in adolescents (ages beginning of menstruation) and postmenopausal women who received hormonal therapy. Endometriosis improved temporarily during pregnancy and improved permanently at menopause, unless there is the use of the hormone estrogen.

Symptoms of endometriosis

Symptoms are often found in endometriosis is difficult to conceive (subferitilitas), pain during menstruation (dysmenorrhea), painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), or chronic pelvic pain (lasting more than 6 months). But can also be without symptoms (asymptomatic).
The important thing to note is the myth that it was normal pain during menstruation occurs. Because of this false myth, patients with endometriosis often come too late for treatment. If the pain is perceived to interfere with and restrict daily activities, then the pain is not normal.
In adult women, menstrual pain point toward endometriosis is severe pain that comes on suddenly after a menstrual period in previous years never feel pain. In addition, if the pain is more severe than usual during menstruation, then this needs to be watched and advised to immediately see a doctor.

Pain appears at the start of menstrual bleeding and lasts for bleeding. Generally, the pain is felt on both sides of the hip and the patient can not make daily activities (going to school or work and other daily activities). Noteworthy is the degree of pain does not describe the severity of endometriosis.
The relationship between endometriosis with infertility problems is still controversial. Women with endometriosis can get pregnant and have children. However, the success rate for pregnancy is very dependent on the individual and the severity of endometriosis. In patients with endometriosis, the risk of spontaneous abortion increased by approximately 40% compared to women without endometriosis (15%-25%).

Symptoms of endometriosis in the digestive tract

Symptoms of endometriosis in the gastrointestinal tract can be ;
stomach and back pain, bleeding from the anus which follows the menstrual cycle, and difficult defecation.
When there endometriosis of the urinary tract, possible symptoms of pain during urination and urine containing blood.
Endometriosis in the lungs may cause symptoms of menstrual blood cough and respiratory disorders. A palpable mass in the body and follow menstrual pain can also be a symptom of endometriosis.
Endometriosis can be detected through ultrasound (USG), and through laparoscopic surgery.

The major complications of endometriosis is difficult to conceive. Approximately 30% -40% of women with endometriosis will have difficulty conceiving. That means there are about 60% -70% of women with endometriosis to conceive. If there is difficulty conceiving, pregnancy program can be done with the help of tools, such as IVF. Some reports suggest that women with endometriosis have a greater risk for developing ovarian cancer. However, cases of ovarian cancer are very rare. The theory that endometriosis may increase the risk of ovarian cancer is still controversial. Other complications that can occur depending on where the location of endometriosis. If the locations are in the bladder, it can lead to blockages and decrease kidney function. If the location is in the lungs, it can cause blood in the lung cavity (hematothorax). While endometriosis is in the brain can cause neurological disorders (neurological).

Cause of endometriosis

Although endometriosis has been known for a long time, but it is not known exactly what causes this disease.
Here are some theories that try to explain the emergence of developing endometriosis, among others :

Implantation theory
Implantation theory, namely the cells of the uterus / endometrium implanted (implantation) due to menstrual flow in the opposite direction. This theory also explains that the lymphatic flow can also deploy cervical cells throughout the body.

Metaplasia theory
Metaplasia theory, the change of various cells with potential cervical cells. But this theory is not supported by clinical evidence or the experiment.

Induction theory
In which biochemical processes in the body stimulates the stem cells into a tissue of the uterus.

In endometriosis there is also a change in the immune system, in which the body's immune system is not able to eliminate cervical cells that are in the wrong location.

Another factor which allows for the occurrence of endometriosis is genetic

First degree relative in question is the mother, aunt, or sibling Someone likely 7 times more likely to develop endometriosis than normal people, if any first-degree relative who had endometriosis.

Another factor for endometriosis occurs among others :
short period of the menstrual cycle, menstrual lots, long menstrual duration, have never given birth, had a history of pelvic infection, uterine deformities.

Prevention of Endometriosis

We can not prevent endometriosis, but we can reduce the chance or opportunity to develop endometriosis by reducing levels of the hormone estrogen in the body. Because estrogen helps thicken the lining of the uterus during the menstrual cycle, as well as against endometriosis.

To keep the levels of estrogen in the body is at a low level, following efforts to be made in preventing endometriosis :

~ Use of hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, injections or implants containing low-dose estrogen. Consult with your doctor.

~ Exercise regularly (more than 4 hours per week). It will also help reduce fat in the body. As it is known that fat tissue also produces estrogen.

~ Avoid alcohol in bulk. Alcohol can lead to increased estrogen levels when drinking more than one drink per day.

~ Avoid caffeinated beverages number. Studies show that drinking more than one glass a day of caffeinated beverages, especially soda, coffee, and green tea, can raise levels of estrogen.

Hopefully the description of the symptoms and causes of endometriosis, as well as prevention is beneficial for you.
