Iron deficiency Can Increase Risk of Stroke

Scientists at Imperial College London have discovered the fact that iron deficiency may increase the risk of stroke because it makes the blood more sticky. The findings, published in the journal PLoS ONE is expected to help prevent stroke. Those iron deficiency has a sticky platelets (small blood cells that trigger blood clotting when sticking together) are more likely to suffer a stroke, according to researchers at Imperial College London in the UK. Even those with fairly low iron levels were twice as likely to suffer a stroke than those with higher levels of iron on average of the normal range. The results are published February 19 in the journal PLoS One. The researchers noted that many people who have other kinds of conditions that allow blood clots pass through pulmonary screening system. They hope these findings may eventually help prevent stroke. Iron deficiency affects approximately 2 billion people worldwide, and recent studies have showed that iron deficiency may be a risk factor for stroke. However, technically still unknown how iron deficiency may increase the risk of stroke. Because platelets in the blood from sticking together if you are iron deficient, we thought this might explain that iron deficiency can lead to stroke, although further research is still needed to prove this relationship," said : Dr. Claire Shovlin, from the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial college London. The next step is to test whether we can reduce the likelihood of patients at high risk of stroke by addressing the deficiencies will iron. We will be able to see whether they become less sticky platelets, said Shovlin. There are still some additional steps of a clot blocking a blood vessel to be progressed to the last step, so it is still unclear effect of platelet stickiness for the whole process, he added. We would certainly encourage more studies to investigate.
